Are umineko and Higurashi related?
Higurashi and Umineko take place in the same story universe as far as I’m aware, but there is no character overlap. As for Umineko, there is an entirely new cast of characters. That said, events in Umineko may shed some light on the workings of the Higurashi / Umineko universe, and it references Higurashi quite a bit.

Is umineko worth playing?
Umineko is a fantastic mystery, but it really goes for the slow burn. I personally think it’s all worth it in the end, but if slow pacing frustrates you then it may not be your kinda game. It does get better, a lot better, but that kinda requires pushing through episode 1 IMO.
Which is better umineko vs Higurashi?
Higurashi is much more focused on horror and thriller until the last two chapters and does it a lot better. Umineko never instills that primal fear in you despite being a murder mystery thriller. Characters are more complex in Umineko probably, but they can far less likable or more annoying in general.
